The Barber dime was first produced in 1892, and designed by Chief Engraver, Charles Barber.  During this time, nearly all the denominations had this same design, this includes the dime, quarter, and half dollar.

Mint Director Edward O. Leech issued a competition to be held for the new silver coinage designs and many artists were invited, but due to the fact that only the winner would get a cash prize, all of the artists refused to participate.  Leech then instead ordered Barber to design the new silver coins.

The obverse of the coin features Liberty, facing right, wearing a large Phrygian cap and a laurel wreath with the word "Liberty" inscribed on a tiny band above her forehead.  The words "United States of America" surround her, and the date is just beneath the bust.  The reverse of the coin holds a wreath surrounding the words "One Dime"

There are a few rarities in the Barber dime series, of course the 1894-S with a mintage of only 24 coins being the most sought-after valuable rarity in the series.
