The Dime is currently the smallest and the thinnest coin minted in the United States

First authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792, the dime didn't quite make its circulated debut until 1796. In 1796, the Draped Bust dime --designed by first Chief Engraver, Robert Scot-- was released into circulation.  The very first dime authorized in 1792, the "disme" was one-tenth the silver weight and value of a dollar.  This coin never made it into circulation due to production problems and very low demand for the coin.

In 1809, the Capped Bust dime was introduced, created by John Reich, and William Kneass.  The Seated Liberty was released in 1837, and following that coin we got the Barber dimes.

One of the more famous dimes came afterward, the Winged Liberty Head dime, which is more popularly known as the Mercury Head dime.  Although it does not actually portray the Roman God Mercury, there is a strong resemblance. The figure featured on the obverse of the coin is actually the Lady Liberty, wearing a winged Phrygian cap, which symbolizes Liberty, and freedom of thought.

Finally we reach our current dimes, the Roosevelt dime.  This coin was was first minted in 1946.  Shortly after the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, he was chosen to be honored on the dime, this was largely due to his work with the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis which became known as the "March of Dimes".
