The first quarter dollars produced were the draped bust in 1796
Although the quarter dollar was authorized by the Mint Act of 1792, the first quarters were not actually produced until four years later in 1796. This was due to the way the Mint operated at the time. The Mint would wait until citizens deposited gold or silver, and then the Mint would change that into coins of varying denominations and return it to the depositor, while keeping a portion of the deposit to pay for their services.
The next quarters to come around were the Capped Bust in 1815, Seated Liberty in 1838, the Barber quarter in 1892, Standing Liberty in 1916, and finally the Washington quarter in 1932.
The Washington quarter was made with silver from 1932-1964, but is now minted as a copper-nickel-clad coin.
Designed by John Flanagan, the Washington quarters were originally intended to be a one-year commemorative coin celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of George Washington, but lawmakers actually voted to continue producing the design in 1934.
The most current version of the quarter is the America The Beautiful series, featuring George Washington on the obverse of the coin, and National Parks from around the country displayed on the reverse.
