The Seated Liberty (or Liberty Seated) dime was first produced in 1837, and was designed by Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht.

The obverse design of the coin features Liberty, seated on a rock.  She is holding a pole with a Phrygian cap (symbolizing freedom), and a shield in her other hand.  The reverse of the coin features a laurel wreath.

When the Liberty Seated design was first released in 1837, it did not have any stars around the edge.

There are two varieties, the large date and the small date variety. The large date is identifiable by looking at the 3 and the 7 in the date.

  • Large date 3 has a pointy serif at the top, and large date 7's horizontal line is straight.
  • Small date 3 has a rounded serif at the top, and small date 7's horizontal line has a slight bulge.

All circulating silver coinage at this time featured the Liberty Seated design.  Coin included the half dime, dime, quarter, half dollar, and the twenty-cent piece which was only minted from 1875-1878 when it was discontinued because it was too similar to the quarter.
